BIG ISSUE COVER ANALYSIS




The masthead is bold and the black writing contrasts with the white background helping the masthead stand out more an the border around the masthead makes it appear eye catching to the audience. Its unique placing and design helps to portray the differences of the Big Issue and a normal magazine sold within a shop. This also helps the Big Issue to be identified as there are few magazines with a similar masthead so the audience are likely to be familiar with the magazine and are therefore able to recognize what magazine that the homeless individuals are selling. The famous Disney story of the beauty and the beast is something that a wide audience would recognize as they are likely to be familiar with the fairy tale and immediately recognize the eye catching image on the cover of Belle dancing with the Beast. Not only this, the audience are likely to recognize Emma Watson on the cover, for her famous role as Hermoine in the Harry Potter series . This would also attract a larger audience because of the actresses huge fan base for her work in acting and feminist campaigner. The image consists a selection of bright colors which would stand out to a buyer or more importantly individual walking by who may see the image and would spark interest in the magazine and maybe then buy it. The captions within the speech bubbles on top of the image will also stand out to the audience. Stars and sparkles are entwined around the characters, not only does this brighten the image, it pulls the cover together, giving it a magical feel, implying the films Disney and magical fairy tail story.

Within the image, Emma Watson, playing the role of Belle, is wearing the famous yellow dress that she wears when attending the ball at the end of the movie. Her partner, the beast, Dan Stevens is animated into the character. This famous image and characters will be ecognused to not only an older adult audience who are familiar with the fairy tail, yet will attract a younger audience and may encourage adults or younger people to buy it. Also, Beauty and her Beast are starring into each others eyes within close proxemics, suggesting that the film is a romance. this would also attract an older audience as older women tend to enjoy watching romance films. Not only this, the film itself is a musical, so would therefore attract people who like to watch musicals. As the audience of the film is so broad, the choice of the magazine featuring Beauty and the Beast would encourage more people to buy the magazine.

This was selected as this period was when George Micheal career was at its best, and he was therefore well known within this period, therefore people are more likely to recognize a picture of the star when thy were most famous as his photos would have been on magazines and his album covers, whereas currently his songs are not in the charts so people will not have been aware of his most recent appearance. As his career was at its highest at this time, the audience for this magazine are likely to be an older generation who were alive and listened to his music when it was in the charts.Despite this, s his music career was so large, many other generations still listen to his music , such as his Christmas song 'Last Christmas' is played every year around the festive period so therefore his name is recognized by many who were not alive or familiar with his music during the 80's. 

The coverline 'George Micheal' is in a large bold font, printed in white. This stands out on the black of Micheal's shirt, making it eye catching and will attract more readers as is name is recognizable and will attract his fan base. Not only this in smaller text and printed yellow above it, states that the magazine is a tribute towards the stars life, so readers may be interested in his fame and will reflect on is life. Below Micheal's name, is a quote by John Bird, reflecting on the singers life also making the audience feel close and personal to the magazine and George's life, making them feel more inclined and encouraged to buy the magazine.

The main image is in a pop art image inspired by Roy Lichtenstein. This is in the 1960's style. This image is of a lady with a shocked facial expression, and appears to look like a woman who is perhaps a mum. Her facial expression relates to her perhaps being disappointed by her child perhaps letting her down on mothers day, connecting to the cover-line which states ' Only the Big Issue can Make your ,mother happy. Don't let her down...'  The use of colours are bright and contrasting, making it stand out to those walking down the street, passing the sellers of the magazine. This will attract their attention and then they might perhaps be interested in the magazine. The audience who are familiar with the style of pop art will be interested in the magazine, attracting a larger audience. Also the Mothers Day issue is relatable to many people, so the issue would be relevant and they might feel they want to but it to get advice on what to buy their mum for mothers day as the issue may give them an insight. 

The cover-line is in the same 'pop art' style, highlighted in yellow with a black border.The font pulls the 60's theme together making the cover appear whole. This makes the cover-line stand out from the main image, and the use of the bright highlighted colour makes the text stand out to the audience, attracting their attention to the issue.
