A comparison of two national newspapers

The Guardian and Daily Mail have contrasting news values because of the different political ideologies. This is because The Guardian is left wing, meaning that it follows political and beliefs of the socialist ideology, and therefore the Daily Mail follows capitalist ideology as it is left wing. This is reflected in the content and often in the language register used to create bias. Their audiences enjoy to read the paper's content that matches their own political position and so their readership is very different. The Daily Mail has more colloquial language, where as the Guardian tend to use less colloquial language as the copy is more formal.

The Guardian follows the layout of a broadsheet newspaper. This means that The Guardian covers news stories in more depth, focusing on politics, economy and 'hard' news events, catering for an educated audience. In comparison to this, the Daily Mail follows the conventions of a tabloid, meaning that the paper includes more 'soft' news such as celebrity stories and sensationalist language to appeal to a different demographic group.

The main noticeable difference between the two papers is the size. The tabloid is half the size of the broadsheet. Despite this, both papers have copy, mages, mass head and headlines, meaning that although the news papers have different content, they both have similar conventions.

By comparing the two papers, you can immediately notice that The Guardian has lots more copy on the cover compared to The Daily mail having fewer columns and therefore less copy on the cover. This shows the amount of depth that The Guardian covers on their stories, suggesting that the audience for The Guardian is more educated and is suggested that they have a larger interest in politics than readers of he Daily Mail.

The audience demographic for the Guardian belongs to the groups ABC1. This means that the audience is mainly upper middle class, middle class and lower middle consisting of higher level to skilled professional work. Similarity to this, the Daily Mail has the audience demographic of ABC1 also, yet more readers above the age of 35, meaning that on average their readers are older than The Guardian. This is because younger people tend to have more socilaist veiws than the older generation so are more likely to read a left wing paper. Despite this, the Daily Mail has overall more readers than The Guardian.
